The Workbasket-Shabby Chic Fashion Ladies Junk Journal

The Workbasket– what is that? A homemaker arts magazine from the 1960’s. This shabby chic fabric and paper journal was inspired by a copy I picked up at a thrift store. The image of the beautiful lady on the front cover was from one of the pages inside. I love to look at these magazines and see how times have changed!

The cover was put together using a method entitled “fabric paper or paper fabric”. The YouTube I watched was by Ronda Winstead. Definitely check it out. The process is fun and easy!

inside front cover with a belly band and journal card along side a corrugated cardboard collage with a vintage Butterick pattern image and lots of fabric and lace.
interior page collaged with more glamorous ladies! Lots of lace, music pages, vintage paper and ephemera!
interior page, lace, buttons ribbon, tags opposite page file folder filled with lined pages for journaling. There are two file folder signatures in this journal.
I can’t resist vintage sewing patterns…these two pages are collaged to the hilt with music, pages from The Workbasket, fabric, lace bead and button adornment.
See why I couldn’t get enough of The workbasket images? They are fantastic! I simply added my signature decoration and bling to the collage pages.

back side of file folder alongside an image I cut out of a McCall’s magazine. Remember that one? It was one of my favorites (I am dating myself!)
Another file folder for journaling. Love the collage on the opposite page. Loaded with craft paper, lace, stamps fabric and jewels!
Last page and Inside of back cover with YES, more embellishments!
Back cover with more The Workbasket pages along with vintage music, pages, papers and lace.

All pages were constructed before attaching them to the spine. I started with a piece of neutral colored heavy card stock which was folded in half. These created the base for my pages. I used a combination of decoupage, sewing and gluing to create my collages.

Once I was satisfied with all my embellishing ( I admit sometimes it is hard to know when to stop) and put in the order I wanted, I attached each of the 5 signatures to the spine. I decided on a three hole pamphlet stitch.

Fabric snippets, ribbon and vintage jewelry were glued to the front for added interest. A lace tie closure with additional strips of ribbon secured together adds the final touch to this beauty.

Any vintage magazine has the ability to inspire! Go pick one up at a local thrift store!

Glitter on friends,

I am a self proclaimed junk journal fanatic and creative crafter. If it is vintage, I am in! I recently retired from the corporate world and now have more time to devote to my love of creating one of a kind treasures. Besides junk journals my hobbies include thrifting, flea market outings, fashion, cooking, hanging with my girlfriends and daughter and golf with my husband. I currently live in the mountains of beautiful Colorado.
