Vintage Shabby Chic Mixed Media Canvas Collage

I had a blank 8×10″ canvas lying around….. what to do with it? Start a mixed media collage of course! I didn’t have any specific idea in mind, so I looked around a my scrap papers and pulled some out. The color scheme just seemed to come together. Orange and Green. Maybe it was because it was springtime. I have learned through trial and error, to start the BOTTOM layer first. In previous collages, I had attached the 3 dimensional pieces first and then tried to finish the background by painting around them. Lets just say that didn’t work for me. Build from the bottom layer up! That’s what I need to remember. First off, I very loosely painted the canvas with Annie Sloan Barcelona Orange Chalk Paint I had (love Annie Sloan Chalk paint – but that’s a whole other topic!) I left lots of canvas showing through. Then I just randomly glued down my scrap papers. Once this layer was complete, I glitter mod podged the whole thing and let it dry. Now on to layering: vintage lace, ribbon, stamps, string and burlap were glued down. I proceeded to getting more 3 dimensional ephemera attached: corrugated cardboard, tags, buttons, handmade music paper and lace flowers, gold clip earring, tulle, pearls, bird cutout built up on a piece of cardboard and a key! The finishing touch was gluing a green gingham lace trim around the outside edge. So fun! Hope you like it!

Glitter on,

I am a self proclaimed junk journal fanatic and creative crafter. If it is vintage, I am in! I recently retired from the corporate world and now have more time to devote to my love of creating one of a kind treasures. Besides junk journals my hobbies include thrifting, flea market outings, fashion, cooking, hanging with my girlfriends and daughter and golf with my husband. I currently live in the mountains of beautiful Colorado.
